When staying at Bed and Craft, you can experience apprenticing under an artisan. Spend three full hours using the same tools and techniques as the artisan to create your own unique work.
How to reserve
For guests booking via the official website
Please make a reservation by adding the experience you wish to have together with your stay to the options on the reservation page of the official website. The booking will be confirmed after confirming with the artisan/personnel concerned whether or not the experience can take place. In the unlikely event that the workshop cannot take place due to the availability of the artisan, the accommodation reservation can be cancelled without any cancellation fees.
For reservations made via external websites
Please contact us by email at least 10 days before the check-in date. At that time, please give us your name, preferred experience (first to third choice), preferred date and number of people.
*Workshop is optional (at an extra cost). There is an age limit and a minimum number of participants.
Wood Carving Spoon
Create your own original spoon under direct supervision in a craftsman's workshop. The desired shape is moulded into the cherry wood and made using the Iwa carving technique. A piece of wood becomes a spoon. It's a quick three hours of immersion in the fascination of craftsmanship.
Lacquer Chopsticks
Guests can experience the kneading of coloured lacquer, a traditional Japanese colour, in a lacquer artist's workshop. Most of the experience involves kneading, but it is the most important process. Finally, you design and apply the lacquer to the chopsticks.
Wood Carving Coaster
Create your own original bean dish under direct instruction in a Buddhist master's workshop. The lotus flower is a symbolic flower of Buddhism and has been used on the bases of Buddhist statues. The workshop creates a wooden bean dish in the shape of a lotus flower, which is a fundamental element for Buddhist masters.
Wood Carving Print
Carve woodblocks under direct guidance in the craftsman’s workshop, and create original designs for woodcut prints. You can produce original postcards such as summer greeting cards, Christmas cards, and New Year’s cards tailored to the season, or freely create your own print artworks. This is a sculptural experience that adults can get seriously absorbed in.
Original Fragrance
Experience the art of expressing the memories of your journey with an original aroma from the wood-scented town of Inami. In this workshop, you can create your own fragrance using natural essential oils extracted from plants. You can take home your original essential oils and aroma crafts in hand-carved wooden containers. There are three types of experiences available: “Awakening,” “Sleeping” and “Bathing.” Please select one course for the whole party (limited to a single type per group).
