A former sericulturist’s house

Throughout history, the silkworm trade has flourished in this region. This villa is a renovation of the former residence of the Fujisawa family, one of the most wealthy and influential sericulturists in the local area. As the silkworm forms their cocoons with many layers of thread, the lacquer artist creates their works by applying many layers of lacquer. The name taë comes from this kind of intricate process. Despite being a compact, one-story house, it offers a distinctly comfortable space that is perfect for accommodating long-term stays. The interior is accented by the unique artworks of lacquer artist Sanae Tanaka created exclusively for this location.

Sanae Tanaka has studied the art of Japanese lacquer under Yukifumi Yokoyama since 1997. She established Tomoru Studio in 2008 with her husband Komei, a wood carver. Expressing shapes cut from everyday scenery mainly with dry lacquer.
