Wood Carving Coaster

This workshop will offer you the great opportunity to create your own wooden coaster taught by a local Buddhist sculptor at his studio. Lotus flowers have long been used as a symbol of Buddhism, especially for the pedestals of Buddha statues, thus carving a lotus flower is a basic technique for Buddhist sculptors.

Yoshisada Ishihara studied in Australia for three years after high school. Returning to Japan, he started studying wood carving under Kiyosada Sunada in 1995, and established his own studio in 2006. Yoshisada has won several prefectural awards.
Schedule
9:00 Gather at the studio. Begin the morning with a friendly chat with the master artisan and other Inami woodcarvers.
9:15 Select your base material from several types of wood.
9:30 Learn how to use a chisel and get started on your project.
10:30 Take a break with a cup of tea; get ready for the second half.
11:00 You will be able to see the final form gradually come into view.
11:45 Apply a coating of natural beeswax to protect the wood.
12:00 Workshop finished.
