This workshop will connect you to the chance to learn the simple art of Inami wooden spoon making with a local professional craftsman who will guide you step by step. You are welcome to join even if you are a beginner who has never held a sculpture knife before.

Komei Tanaka has studied wood carving under Seiji Maekawa since 1976. He established Tomoru Studio in 2008 with his wife Sanae, a lacquer artist. In 2018, Komei’s works were exhibited in Hong Kong.
Schedule
9:00 Gather at the studio. Begin the morning with a friendly chat with the master artisan and other Inami
9:15 Choose a block of cherry blossom wood and design the shape of your spoon with a pencil.
9:30 Learn how to use a chisel and get started on your project.
10:30 Take a break with a cup of tea; get ready for the second half.
11:00 You will be able to see the final form gradually come into view.
11:45 Apply a coating of natural beeswax to protect the wood.
12:00 Workshop finished.

- 12 years old or older The workshop contains numerous sharp tools and instruments. For safety reasons, children under the age of 12 are not permitted to enter the workshop.

- The workshop takes place in the artisan’s workshop. For safety reasons, children under 10 years of age are not allowed to visit the workshop, as knives and sensitive lacquer are within reach.
- We recommend that you refrain from wearing nail art, rings, etc., as they may be scratched during the work.
